Mission Statement
The Stanford Medicine Postbaccalaureate Experience in Research Program provides research and training opportunities to enable scholars to become successful graduate or medical students. We aim to create a pipeline into higher education for scholars with demonstrated potential in STEMM and health related fields. This program will provide essential training needed to advance students in their career goals and build a diverse research community.
Objectives
The program has five core objectives to aid in positioning postbacs for a successful transition into PhD and MD/PHD programs.
1. Provide a rigorous and comprehensive research opportunity: Our goal is to provide foundational research training in biomedical science to postbacs from diverse backgrounds, that will bolster their skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue graduate training.
2. Support trainees’ application preparation: The process for applying to graduate and medical school is time-consuming and daunting for trainees, especially those without ready access to role models and mentors who have graduate and medical school experience. This program provides supportive infrastructure to enable participants to submit highly competitive PhD and MD program applications.
3. Enhance trainees’ professional development skills: Professional development is a broad range of soft skills including communication, time management, and networking that serve to maximize the impact of an individual. Trainees will learn to clearly share their research products with the broader community, manage interpersonal professional relationships, and expand their research and career network.
4. Create an integrated community of belonging: Studies show that a sense of community and belonging promotes retention of trainees in STEMM. This program is designed to foster a community of support and respect across social and professional differences that enable scholars to reach their full potential.
5. Support trainee mental health and well-being: This is a program that de-stigmatizes mental health and wellness in STEMM and centers the unique and intersectional experiences of postbacs from marginalized groups. We provide several workshops and resources to enrich mental health literacy and cognitive awareness such that participants can thrive in the challenging environments at Stanford and any future endeavors.
