About the Program

Stanford Medicine is proud to launch the Racial Equity to Advance a Community of Health (REACH) post-baccalaureate research program whose primary mission is to assist scholars in strengthening their applications to medical or graduate school in the biomedical sciences. Specifically REACH targets those who have not had the research exposure that is increasingly required.  Our program provides this opportunity and more to high achieving, highly motivated scholars! Along with a foundational research experience, scholars have the opportunity to develop academically and professionally while building a personal and professional network. The program includes workshops such as application writing, garnering letters of recommendation, data presentation, and scientific writing. A major component of our program is to build a more equitable community within Stanford through intentional social programming aimed at growing your network amongst students and faculty. We will also be building community across departments and schools, so your time here at Stanford will provide opportunities and introductions to numerous fields of study.

Program Goals

The program aims to provide research opportunities and professional development training that enhance each scholar’s applications to graduate and medical schools. In addition, we will build a collaborative diverse community that fosters equity and belonging across departments, with the eventual goal of expanding the pipeline of students applying to Stanford graduate and medical schools.

The program offers a rigorous 1-2 year research opportunity with structured professional development and academic training components.  Additionally, we will develop our community through collaborative events around scientific and societal topics.

Along with a high-level research experience, program participants have the opportunity to grow academically and to join workshops focused on building the critical skills for gaining admission into top graduate and medical programs. Workshops will include application writing, garnering letters of recommendation, data presentation, and scientific writing to name but a few.

  • Funding is guaranteed for one year with the annual salary of ~$60,000.
  • Full health care benefits will be provided
  • Access to all Stanford recreational and research facilities are included

A major component of our program is to build a more equitable community within Stanford, as such the REACH Postbacs program includes intentional social programming to grow a network among program participants, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and faculty. We will also be connecting communities across departments, schools and the Bay area, so that participants will be introduced to numerous fields of study at Stanford.
